Construction and principle of operation
FGWC combined filter-heat exchangers
combine the functions of gas filters with cellulose filter cartridges, with gas
heat exchangers. They are designed as welded steel constructions. Below
cross-section illustrates the principle of operation of combined filter-heat
exchanger. Contaminated gas flows into the FGWC body via an inlet pipe and, as
a result of gas flow speed decrease, larger contamination particles fall down
to the bottom of the tube side. Other contamination particles are separated,
while gas flows through the filter cartridge. Clean gas is directed from the
inner part of the cartridge into a pipe system (coil), immersed in a hot bath
(where it is heated) and then to the outlet pipe.
Combined filter-heat exchangers are
equipped with a pipe connector located on the shell side, to connect a safety
equipment. If a tube is damaged, gas may be immediately vented into the
atmosphere, e.g. through a safety valve. In standard applications the pipe
connector is designed with a flat flange PN16. When the shell side’s design
pressure is the same as gas section’s design pressure, safety is provided by
application of HON (RMG) 790 valve set for the maximal pressure of the heating
medium in the boiler system. Gas escaping through the damaged tube is captured
inside the shell side of the heat exchanger.
